Nosso Pupu maior

E a malinha! Não estava pronta também. Corro eu à casa pegar as primeiras roupinhas.

Our Pupu major

"My dear Pupu, in moonlight night, in Neomater appeared, along with the little birds"

Twenty one years ago, around half past five, our daughter Isabela came to us. She arrived a little before agreed, which was a harbinger of her character: never leave for tomorrow what can be done yesterday. This took us, me and her mother, by surprise. We rushed to NeoMater, the maternity hospital in São Bernardo, running out of fuel in the old black Monza. Even nowadays, we laugh when we remember the face of the employee of the gas station, fueling the car while her mother “agonized” in the back seat. Boga’s stuff, as people say even nowadays.

In the hospital, Dr. Gilberto Palma was recruited hastily and it was not possible to run the planned shooting. And the little suitcase! This wasn’t ready either and I run home to pick up the first little clothes. I picked at random the things which first appeared in the drawer. And the result is these little pajamas, twice as big as you, but that was what we had for the nursery picture. Oh, Boga… this is what people say, up to now.

Isabela is born. The woman comes to the glass window to show us – to me and to her aunt Dega, always present. The first time I saw that little face, those little eyes, that little mouth... it was love at first sight. At that moment, I felt my life was changing forever. I was a father. Let’s come back in time. The news of Joana’s pregnancy was broken to me in an event of Santo André City Hall in which we were taking part. I was dizzy, really happy. Then, nine months tanning the gestation, preparing the outfit, the bedroom, the first gift - from the dear Bete, mom and son yellow hypo. My first gift was a little perfume, Giovanna Baby I guess.

First day at home. Extreme care, both naive, the precious help of the aunts, the first bath was given by Nancy, the most experienced cousin. I had some ability, developed with my niece, Shirley, who lived at my parent’s place until she was four. Paternity rehearsal. But, no problem. Love instructs us, and I think we’ve done everything properly. The proof is the healthy, pretty girl we have today, finding her way on her own in another country, out of sight, but always so close to our heart (I know this is a cliche, but very adequate).

Today, when our daughter reaches adulthood, so many scenes come to mind… So many images, sounds, smells, colors… Life was lovely to us, bringing us this being so beautiful, so sweet, so affectionate. We feel a bit thunderstruck when we notice the time passes so fast, but I believe all the moments were enjoyed intensely, each smile, cry, achievement, frustration, everything was lived fully, even if not always present.

Few hours after Isa coming, Mariana - her cousin-sister-best friend-etc. - arrives. In the same day my mother Hirde had been born, but she couldn’t stay to meet the daughter of her only boy who survived (the first son of my parents didn’t resist and lived only a few hours). Neither her grandma Alice had the opportunity to meet the daughter of her penultimate child.

The grandfathers Almindo and Francisco, however, could give her affection and feel the taste of life renovation a newborn always brings. But, to meet them, Isa had to travel. First to Praia Grande, afterwards to Cáceres (MT). After that, our daughter never stopped travelling. Itinerant spirit, sense of independence, a huge curiosity about life and a desire to know everything. She’s a native traveler. Sometimes the nostalgia pursues her; however, this is a stimulus to come back to her beloved.

A girl with a way with the arts. As any kid, she danced, painted, sang, but it was with acting that she identified, and acted up to deciding, unexpectedly, to follow her father’s footsteps. Without forgetting, however, the bias inherited from her mother. Ultimately, an abstract of both of us, perfected by the vigor of the youth, the willingness to perform, to know, to do. For she has aims, objectives, courage and attitude. Her mother and I gave her life, and she has made of this life the best she could.

On this date, my daughter, your mother and I testimony, publicly, the enormous love we feel for you, how much we miss you. You’re so far away, but it is important that you keep facing life fearlessly and preparing yourself to shine, as we are sure you’ll do. Follow your destiny calm and quietly, being sure that you’re truly loved by all of us and that no matter the decisions you have to take in life, you’ll always have our support and trust.

Love,

Your parents
